Dan Brown In Our Care

Dan Brown was born on January 18, 1931, to Robert and Rosa Lee Brown in Charleston, South Carolina who both preceded him in death.  Dan was raised by his grandmother Nancy B. Jackson along with this brother and sister. He was educated in the Charleston school system at Henry P. Archer Elementary School. By the age of 12 years old Dan and his family moved to Harlem, New York where he continued his education at Fredrick Douglas High School. He worked for many years and in 1955, he diligently commuted on the New York City Subway to work in the shipyard in Brooklyn, New York until he retired in 1993.

Ephesians 6:2  Honor thy mother and father
In 1960, Dan met and fell deeply in love with his forever soulmate, Viola and unfortunately, they lost their only baby son early after giving birth. With the power of a man being exemplified in the way he raises children, Pop, was certainly this man as he raised the 2 youngest daughters, Saundra and Margaret; while still being a caring father to his eldest daughter Beatrice.  In time, all of his daughters became married and he developed father-son relationships with his son-in-laws, James Wynne, Daryl Dancy, and Lester McCants.
In the 1980’s Dan and Viola purchased their first home together and made many happy and loving memories including family visits and holiday dinners at 3232 Bronx Boulevard, in the Bronx, NY. At this residence, Dan attentively took care of Viola in her good health and in her sickness. He and Viola also provided extra support to his daughter, Margaret and her children who lived upstairs. In 1999, Viola preceded Dan in death, and he took on the family leadership role in an even more powerful and loving manner.

Proverbs 17:6  Grandfathers are the crown of old men, and the glory sons and daughters are their father
Dan continued to lead in love, care, and respect with his loved ones as his family grew to 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. For many years, Dan happily traveled to the south on many occasions to spend time and enjoy his sister, nieces, nephews and cousins. He dedicated his time to visiting his sister Sadie, who also lived in New York City, and he and his other older sister, Carrie, were featured in the Jesup, Georgia newspaper in acknowledgement of their decades later brother-sister reunion.
In the early 2000’s Dan moved to his latest residence, a senior citizen building, Jonas Brock apartment located in the Bronx, NY next to his eldest daughter and son, Bea and Sonny. They visited each other almost daily lending company to each other and watching his baseball. Every week, he visited a senior community center, where he enjoyed playing pool, attending events, and sharing meals and stories with other seniors that he developed great relationships with.
At the amazing age of 90 years old, his family leadership continued, and he moved to Episcopal House senior citizen apartments and started his new journey in Allentown, Pennsylvania where his daughter and son, Saundra and Daryl Dancy, and his now older grandchildren reside.
Through an invitation from a church member, Dan began visiting Word of Faith Church and instantly grew to love the church and its members. Within a short time, the adults and children received pleasure in his shared wisdom and care.

Dan enjoyed playing cards, dancing, watching the New York Yankees, and eating collard greens and smoked neckbones. Some of the favorite memories that his grandchildren have with him are the memories of him teaching them how to play cards games and dancing with him. One of his funniest sayings with his youngest granddaughter was “if you can’t beat em, cheat em.” Some of the memories that his other family has with him are the distant travels that he made to visit them and share fun times together. Dan cherished special times with the cousins that he shared many memories with, Ingrid (Joette), Joann, and Carl Robert.

Dan was the last known surviving brother to his siblings who all preceded him in death: Carrie, Christina, Elizabeth, Sadie, Louis, and Alfred.
Dan is survived by his children Beatrice (with Sonny), with their children, Choice, Todd, Elizabeth and Cathy; his daughter Saundra (with Daryl), with their children Adriane, John, and Danasia; and his daughter Margaret (with Lester) with their children, Lester Jr., Viola, and Joseph, his 17 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dan was a phenomenal father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, church member, and friend. He will continue to be in our hearts.
